Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is also known as rapid ejaculation.

It is defined as “ejaculation that occurs sooner than a man wishes, or too quickly during intercourse to satisfy his partner.”

Premature ejaculation is the most common sexual dysfunction among men and it is estimated that about one third of men suffer from it.

Can affect relationships and lead to erection problems

Premature ejaculation may affect relationships, lead to erection problems and a loss of sexual desire. This problem can occur at any age but is most common in younger men. It is important for individuals to realize that premature ejaculation is a problem which is easily treated.

If the problem is not addressed it may lead to low self-confidence, low feelings of self-worth and avoidance of relationships.

The most common cause of premature ejaculation is lack of control

The man may lack knowledge and awareness of the sensual or sensory mechanisms of the body. This would lead to brief and unfulfilling sexual encounters. Often, the man becomes so preoccupied with trying to control his ejaculation that he is unable to fully enjoy the sexual act.

Treatment of premature ejaculation

Treatment involves cognitive behavioural therapy, and becoming more aware of sensory cues.

Other treatments focus on the psychological aspect of premature ejaculation. The problem may be caused by anxiety, depression, fear of intimacy, negative views about sex and performance anxiety. A qualified sexologist will help the individual to identify the source of the problem and overcome it.
