Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction is defined as “the inability to achieve and/or maintain an erection that is suitable for penetration.”
It is important to distinguish erectile dysfunction from other sexual difficulties, for example: low libido or premature ejaculation.
About one in ten men suffer from continuing or chronic erectile dysfunction, and approximately one third of men over the age of 50 are likely to have erectile difficulties.
Studies have shown that only a small minority of men consult their GPs about erectile dysfunction due to fears of embarrassment.
Relationships and self-confidence suffer
Relationships and feelings of self-confidence suffer when sexual dysfunctions are kept secret and untreated. A loss of self-worth and feelings of failure are common for both parties within the relationship.
It is important to know that erectile dysfunction is often easily treatable, and seeking treatment early is extremely important.
Causes of ED
Erectile Dysfunction may be physically, medically or psychologically related, and may even be a combination of all the causes.
It is for this reason that sexology takes an holistic approach to treatment, incorporating environmental, psychological and physical factors when treating sexual disorders.
- The psychological cause for Erectile Dysfunction may be due to a connection between the thoughts and emotions.
- Stress, anxiety, concerns about sexual performance or physical attraction as well as family and financial worries may interrupt the process of the brain sending messages for more blood to flow to the penis.
- Medical causes of erectile dysfunction may involve issues around the brain and nervous system, the arteries and veins in the penis and the actual penile spongy tissues. There are several medications available to treat these problems.
It is important not only to treat the medical condition, but also the relationship which may have suffered due to sexual difficulties.
By recognising the signs of sex addiction, seeking professional help, and approaching the journey towards healing with empathy and commitment, there is hope for rebuilding trust, intimacy, and a fulfilling relationship.
