Common Sexual Health Concerns - Men

According to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 3 out of 10 men, and 4 out of 10 women, experience sexual issues at some point in their lives.

Relationships and feelings of self-confidence suffer when sexual dysfunctions are kept secret and untreated. A loss of self-worth and feelings of failure are common for both parties within the relationship.

The most common issues faced by men include: premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction and low sexual desire.

Premature ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is the most common sexual dysfunction among men and it is estimated that about one third of men suffer from it at some point in their lives.

Premature ejaculation may affect relationships, lead to erection problems and a loss of sexual desire. This problem can occur at any age but is most common in younger men.

It is important for sufferers to realise that premature ejaculation is a problem which is easily treated. If the problem is not addressed it may lead to low self-confidence, low feelings of self-worth and avoidance of relationships.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is defined as “the inability to achieve and/or maintain an erection that is suitable for penetration.” It is important to distinguish erectile dysfunction from other sexual difficulties, for example: low libido or premature ejaculation.

About one in ten men suffer from continuing or chronic erectile dysfunction, and approximately one third of men over the age of 50 are likely to have erectile difficulties.

Studies have shown that only a small minority of men consult their GPs about erectile dysfunction due to fears of embarrassment. However, erectile dysfunction is often easily treatable, and seeking treatment early is extremely important.
